What is a
application (app)?

know-how from A-Z

An application, or app for short, is an application program that can perform different functions for different target groups so that end devices can be adapted to user needs. These are additional programs that have no system functionality, so that the operating system can work properly without these programs.

It is often assumed that apps only refer to mobile applications that run on smartphones and tablets. However, this is only partially true, as there are also a large number of apps available for computers, such as for notes or Microsoft Office applications.

When developing apps, the different types of applications should be considered as early as possible and the appropriate application developed depending on the project objective, budget and time required:

  • Native apps
A native application is programmed in the specific development language of an operating system and is therefore developed individually for operating systems such as iOS or Android.
    Example: WhatsApp
  • Web apps
Unlike native applications, web apps are platform-independent websites that work equally on every device, as a browser is used to display them.
    Example: Google Search
  • Hybrid apps
Hybrid apps are a combination of native applications and web applications. Google Flutter, for example, is ideal for such cross-platform app development. Hybrid apps work both within the app and in the browser, allowing more users to be reached.
    Example: Instagram

There are now millions of different applications that serve different user needs. However, despite their advantages, apps can also hide some disadvantages:

  • Some apps access personal information in the background, such as contacts, camera or photos. The permissions of an app should therefore always be checked carefully.
  • In addition, many free apps have advertising banners or providers hide in-app purchases in their apps so that developers can earn money by charging users for additional functions.
  • A major risk is malware, which is sometimes installed when some apps are installed. Therefore, only reputable apps with a high number of downloads and good reviews should be installed via the official app stores.
