Search engine marketing (SEM) is part of online marketing and refers to all marketing measures aimed at increasing the visibility of a website in search engines.

Search engine marketing can be divided into two areas.

  1. Search engine optimization (SEO), which in turn is subdivided into on-page optimization and off-page optimization, focuses on measures relating to the website in order to prepare its own offer for search engines in the best possible way and thus achieve an optimal position within the SERPs.
  2. Search engine advertising (SEA), on the other hand, refers to the placement of paid advertising (ads) on third-party websites, within social media or on the SERPs.
