What is web architecture?

Know-How from A-Z

The term web architecture describes not only the visual parameters of the design, but also the conceptual structure of the World Wide Web, i.e. the Internet.

The Internet enables communication between users as well as a technical synergy of different systems and subsystems. This requires different file formats and components, which in their entirety represent the infrastructure of the Internet. Users are dependent on the organization of content on the Internet. The architecture of the website is therefore an important criterion for user-friendliness.

Essentially, the web architecture consists of three core components:

  • Data transfer protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP)
  • Representation formats (HTML, CSS, XML)
  • Addressing standards (URI, URLs)
