What is Weibo?

Know-How from A-Z

Weibo is a microblogging service that was launched by the SINA Corporation in 2009. The background to this was the shutdown of Twitter and Facebook in China and Hong Kong. Weibo was called Sina Weibo until 2014.

The design and structure of Sina Weibo is similar to a mixture of Facebook and Twitter. You can play games similar to Facebook and the length of text messages, for example, is limited to 140 words, as it used to be on Twitter. The difference, however, is that this platform is used almost exclusively by people who speak Chinese.

Posting messages is the main component of Sina Weibo, which is why it is classified as a short messaging service. Up to 2,000 Chinese characters, including videos and photos, can be published.
