What is XML?

Know-How from A-Z

Extensible Markup Language, or XML for short, is a programming language. Similar to HTML, XML is used to describe various data in text form. However, the text in an XML file is much more structured.

An XML document consists of so-called elements, which are marked up with tags. In contrast to HTML, the tags in XML can be freely defined and have no fixed meaning. Only the appearance is prescribed by start and end tags and a hierarchical structure. This looks as follows, for example:

<title>What is XML?</title>
<teaser>Here you can find out what XML is, what it is used for and ...</teaser>

XML is generally used to store, exchange and describe data. In SEO, the programming language is used to create sitemaps, which can then be uploaded to the Google Search Console, for example.
