What is a CMS?

know-how from A-Z

A content managementsystem, or CMS for short, is software that is used to create and manage content, i.e. text, image or video content. CMS are used to operate websites as well as other platforms such as an intranet or blog.

The content management system is divided into two areas, the content and the layout, so that both areas can be changed independently of each other. The content and templates are stored in a database. The websites then build the page dynamically from the database and the page templates. No programming knowledge is required to operate a content management system.

The best-known CMSs include Joomla!, WordPress, Contao and TYPO3.
