What is a short message service?

Know-how from A-Z

Short message services are (online) services for the publication or transmission of short messages. These include SMS on the one hand and microblogging services on the other.

SMS ( short message service) is a telecommunications service that can be used to send and receive text messages. These messages are limited to approx. 160 characters.

Not only the service is referred to as SMS, but also the messages themselves. Other messaging service formats have been developed from SMS, such as MMS ( Multimedia Messaging Service) or EMS ( Enhanced Message Service). However, the number of SMS messages sent has now fallen sharply, partly due to the introduction of instant messengers such as WhatsApp or Telegram.

So-called microblogging services are a combination of instant messaging and the production of content that is shared with an online audience. The best-known microblog, for example, is Twitter. GIFs, photos, videos and texts can be published on this short message service, whereby a so-called tweet, i.e. a post within Twitter, is limited to a maximum of 280 characters.

In the field of online marketing, short messaging services can be used for the display of campaigns as part of search engine advertising (SEA) or, for example, as a chat function on websites.
