What is machine learning?

Know-how from A-Z

Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers to automatically learn from experience and improve themselves. ML algorithms analyze data, recognize patterns and make decisions without explicit programming.

There are different types of machine learning:

  • Supervised learning: In supervised learning, you train algorithms with sample data that already contains correct answers. The algorithm then learns to predict the correct answers given new data.

  • Unsupervised learning: Unsupervised learning means training algorithms without predetermined answers. They have to find patterns in the data themselves, for example by grouping similar data points.

  • Reinforcement learning: Reinforcement learning works via a system of rewards and punishments. An algorithm learns by trial and error which actions produce the best results in certain situations.

  • Semi-supervised learning: Semi-supervised learning is a hybrid form where the algorithm is trained with some data with answers and a lot without. This helps when not enough pre-labeled data is available.
