Real Time Bidding, or RTB for short, is a method in which ad servers allocate advertising space to advertisers. This gives marketers the opportunity to bid in real time for each individual ad impression on the SERPs.

The method is also referred to as Real Time Advertising, or RTA for short, and is used in particular in programmatic advertising, which in turn is part of online marketing.

However, bidding only works with complete automation, meaning that customers must determine in advance exactly which user, at what time and at what price a bid for an ad impression should apply.
