What is the First Paint?

know-how from A-Z

The time to first paint, FP for short, is a measured value for page speed. It describes the time at which the browser displays the first pixel or the first display element of a website when loading.

The FP indicates to the user that the website is accessible and reduces the bounce rate, as the user is prepared to wait longer for the loading process. However, large amounts of data delay the Time to First Paint, which is why it is important to keep the amount of data as small as possible.

In addition to the Time to First Paint, the Paint Timing API can be used to analyze different states of the loading times, such as the Time to First Meaningful Paint (FMP) or the Time to Interactive (TTI).
