What is a long tail keyword?

Know-how from A-Z

When classifying keywords, a distinction is made between long-tail keywords and short-tail keywords. Long tail keywords are relatively specific and combined search terms. Although these are sometimes not searched for as often, as they are specific search queries, they are also less competitive, meaning that they can be used more effectively in terms of online marketing activities.

Long tail keywords are often used by users who have a precise idea of their desired product or a problem for which they need an exact solution. This is why long tail keywords are also referred to as niche keywords.

Short tail keywords often attract more traffic, but are also highly competitive. As a result, optimization for these search terms is usually more complex and ranking on the first page of the SERPs is also more difficult. In addition, ads tailored to such keywords are associated with higher costs.
